Building your 5 step complete fluoride-free dental routine

If you’re looking to go fluoride-free without compromising your smile, we’ve got good news: a growing body of research shows that modern fluoride-free ingredients really do hold their own when it comes to protecting your teeth. Ingredients such as hydroxyapatite (a biomimetic mineral) and calcium-phosphate systems can meaningfully support enamel and gum health when used consistently. We’ve put together a complete, practical routine you can follow using fluoride-free ingredients to keep on top of your oral health.

Quick note: Nothing here replaces advice from your dentist, especially if you’re at high risk for cavities or gum disease. But if you’d like to follow a fluoride-free routine, this guide will help.

Why go fluoride-free?

Fluoride-free oral care has come a long way in recent years, so whether you want to switch for health reasons, sensitivities or just curiosity about cleaner products, you won’t be sacrificing protection by changing products. Some people do find fluoride-based products can be harsh on their mouths or skin, and there are also increasing concerns in general about the amount of chemicals we as humans are exposed to. Moving to be fluoride free takes advantage of modern scientific and ingredient advances to live a cleaner lifestyle.

Recent randomized trials [1] show hydroxyapatite-based (HAP) toothpastes can perform non-inferior to fluoride toothpastes on key outcomes like early caries progression (the process of tooth decay) and caries-related variables in both adults and children. Ingredients like hydroxyapatite resemble natural tooth mineral and can help with sensitivity while supporting remineralization [2].

With effective alternatives now readily available to purchase “over the counter” (or online), it’s easier than ever to build a fluoride-free routine that still keeps your teeth strong and your gums healthy. The key is knowing what to look for and how to use these products to get the most out of them.

Please note – going fluoride free means you should still keep sugar intake low, and floss on a regular basis!

Your 5 step fluoride-free daily routine (AM & PM)

1) Clean between teeth (before brushing)

  • What to use: Unwaxed or waxed floss, interdental brushes, or a water pick/flosser. All of these are readily available to buy either in many stores or online.
  • Why: Removes plaque where brushes can’t reach, making the active ingredients in your toothpaste and mouthwash more effective.

2) Brush thoroughly for 2 minutes

  • What to use: A fluoride-free toothpaste (e.g. one that is hydroxyapatite or calcium-phosphate based). You should also use a soft bristle manual or electric brush.
  • Technique: Brush in small, gentle circles at a 45° angle to the gumline. Brush your tongue and inside your cheeks lightly so as to clean but not cause soft tissue damage.

3) Spit, and don’t rinse with water

Rinsing straight after brushing washes away any helpful ingredients left on your teeth. delaying rinsing or a drink helps to protect your teeth for longer.

4) Rinse with fluoride-free mouthwash

  • Our OraltidePro™ Mouthwash has a peptide-based, fluoride-free mouthwash formulation which is designed to support enamel remineralization, help balance oral bacteria, and promote healthy gums—ideal benefits to pair with a fluoride-free toothpaste.
  • How to use: After brushing, swish per label directions, then spit. Avoid eating/drinking for at least 30 minutes to let the active ingredients stay in the mouth.

5) Mid-day support (an optional step)

Chew sugar-free gum containing xylitol. Chewing stimulates saliva production and can reduce help to plaque accumulation; trials show products containing xylitol can modestly improve plaque indices and microbial profiles.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener; a type of sugar alcohol often used in sugar-free dental products as it helps to protects your teeth by reducing the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

Weekly & monthly add-ons

  • Undertake an interdental deep-clean: Once or twice a week, spend an extra 2–3 minutes with interdental brushes on the spaces between your teeth, especially if any are very tight together.
  • Think about your tongue care: Use a tongue scraper a few times per week to reduce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) associated with bad breath.
  • Attend your dental checkups: Make sure you have any professional cleanings and check-ups as recommended by your dentist (this is typically every 6 months to a year), especially if you’re transitioning away from fluoride.

Building your fluoride-free dental kit

Start with a good toothpaste: Look for fluoride-free formulas featuring hydroxyapatite or calcium-phosphate systems for enamel support and sensitivity relief. Recent studies show these can be non-inferior to fluoride in slowing early caries in certain populations when used correctly.

Flouride-free mouthwash: invest in a good mouthwash that meets your fluoride-free goal – OralTidePRO™ also supports enamel remineralization, healthy gums, and microbial balance.

Buy and use interdental tools such as floss, tapes, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

Gum/mints containing xylitol – you should also check that these are sugar-free.

How to transition from fluoride to fluoride-free

  1. Set a baseline: before you switch, visit your dentist and make sure you know of any active lesions or gum inflammation in your mouth.
  2. Switch one product at a time: Start with toothpaste first, then add OraltidePro™ Mouthwash. This will allow you to check that these products agree with you.
  3. Change your diet & habits: if you eat a lot of sugary or acidic snacks, we’d advise reducing these or trying sugar-free alternatives.

We’d also recommend to rinse with water after meals and chew xylitol gum when brushing isn’t possible.

  1. Track your results: Watch for sensitivity reduction, fresh-breath longevity, and your hygienist’s plaque/bleeding scores.
  2. Revisit with your dentist: if you can, revisit your dentist after 6 months, especially if you have a history of high cavity risk – there may be more products or strategies to try such as sealants, dietary counselling, or more frequent cleanings.
